COMMUNITIES
A home for every field, and a room for every team
Communities are where Buildfolk members meet, talk and build together, by text and by voice.
The main Buildfolk community
Every member is part of the main Buildfolk community from the moment they join. It is the place to say hello, ask questions, share what you are building and meet people from other fields.
Its Announcements page is where the host of Buildfolk shares news: new features, changes to the rules, events and important updates. Only the host can post there, so everything you read in Announcements is official. You get a notification when something new is announced.
Official communities for every field
Buildfolk runs an official community for each field: web development, AI and machine learning, mobile apps, cybersecurity, IoT and hardware, game development, open source, cloud and DevOps, UI and UX design, electronics and embedded, robotics, mechanical and CAD, electrical and power, civil and architecture, and data science. When you choose your fields, you are added to their communities automatically, so there are people to talk to from your first day. Each has a General page, Help and questions, Show your build, and a voice room. You can leave any of them at any time.
Create your own community
Any member can create a community for their college, club, team, field or project. As its creator you are the community's host: you name it, describe it, and add pages for different topics, such as "General", "Help", "Show your build" or "Voice lounge".
- Text pages work like a group chat for everyone in the community. Reply to a message, react to it, or mention someone with @ and their name to notify them.
- Share a project into a page as a card that opens its full project page.
- Invite links let a host bring their club or team in with one link.
- Voice pages are open voice rooms: join with one click and talk with the members who are in the room, like a meeting that is always open.
- Hosts can rename or remove pages, remove members and delete messages that break the rules.
Safe by design
To keep younger members safe, adults and teens have separate spaces. Communities are either for adults (18 and over) or for teens (13 to 17), and members only see and join communities for their own age group. The main community has a separate lounge for each group, and everyone reads the same Announcements.
Voice is never recorded. Like calls, the sound goes directly between members' browsers, encrypted, so the other people in a voice room can see your network address. Text messages are stored so the community can read them, and anyone can report a message or block a member.
EVERYTHING IN BUILDFOLK
What you can do, explained in full
One free account opens all of it. Here is what each part does and how it works.
Projects and your portfolio
Publish a page for each thing you build: a title, a short description, the field it belongs to, a cover screenshot and up to six more, a demo video of up to two minutes, the tools you used, what problem it solves, how it works, its key features and what you learned. You can add links to a live demo and to GitHub. Code, circuits, robots, machines, CAD models, structures and research all belong here.
Your developer profile collects your field, headline, skills, what you are open to (internships, jobs, freelance work or collaboration) and up to five links, next to every project you have published. It becomes one page you can share with teachers, teams and recruiters.
Feedback and collaboration
Mark a project as "Looking for feedback" and other members can comment on it with honest, specific advice. Mark it "Looking for teammates" and they can send you a collaboration request with a short message; you choose whether to accept. When you accept, you can find each other on Buildfolk Social.
Explore Projects
Browse what members are building, search by name or technology, and filter by field: mechanical, civil, electrical, electronics, robotics, web, AI, data, security and more. Visitors without an account can read adults' public projects; teens' projects are only visible to members they follow.
Project analytics
For each of your projects you can see its views, unique visitors and clicks on its live-demo and GitHub links over the last 30 days. Visits are counted anonymously: no cookies, no stored IP addresses or names, and your own visits are not counted. Only you can see your project's numbers.
Buildfolk Social
Share posts with up to five photos or one video, and Waves: short videos of up to two minutes. Follow people, like and comment, send messages to your contacts and call them by voice or video. Calls go directly between the two browsers and are not recorded.
Buildfolk Stage
Buildfolk Stage is the public showcase of Buildfolk, like a professional feed made only of builders and their work. Every project published by an adult with a public account appears there automatically as a card: the builder, the screenshots, the field, the tools and whether they are looking for feedback or teammates. Anyone can browse Stage, even without an account.
Members like projects, comment (comments are the project's feedback), save projects for later, share links and follow builders. Each builder has a public portfolio page with all their projects, skills and what they are open to. Projects can include a demo video of up to two minutes that plays right in the feed.
Members under 18 can choose to show their work on Stage too, after the Buildfolk team checks each project, and only the work: their name, photo and profile are never shown, nobody can follow them from Stage, and only other teens can comment on their projects. Open Buildfolk Stage.
AI workspace
Chat with AI models using your own OpenRouter API key. Your chats go from your browser straight to OpenRouter, not through our server, and any charges on your key are between you and OpenRouter. The Dual AI Studio lets a planner agent and a builder agent work on a task together. AI answers can be wrong, so check anything important.
Shopping (coming soon)
Shopping is not open yet. When it opens, builders will be able to sell their products and buy from each other. We are getting it ready first, including everything the law asks of an online marketplace.
Buildfolk Arcade
Forty small browser games made by the Buildfolk team: 20 to play on your own and 20 for two players on one screen. There are no prizes, bets or real-money rewards.
Opportunities
Hackathons, internships, open-source projects, competitions, scholarships, events and jobs, each one checked by the Buildfolk team before it is listed. Filter by kind and field, save the ones you like and get a reminder two days before they close. When a new listing matches your fields, you are notified. Know a real opportunity? Suggest it, and we check it before it goes live. Some listings are only for adults or only for members under 18.
Search, teams and the weekly email
One search box in the workspace finds people, projects, communities and opportunities (press / to jump to it). Credit the people you built a project with: add them by @name, and once they accept, the project shows on their portfolio too. Teams are either all adults or all members under 18. If you like, turn on a weekly email with new projects and opportunities in your fields; it is off unless you turn it on, and every email has a one-click unsubscribe link.
Coming soon
The Buildfolk app for Windows. You can ask to be emailed once when it is ready.
ACCOUNTS, AGE AND SAFETY
How joining works, and how we keep members safe
Who can join
Buildfolk is for people aged 13 and over. When you sign up you give your full name, email address, date of birth and a password of at least 12 characters. Sign-up refuses anyone whose date of birth shows they are under 13. Your date of birth is used only to apply the age rules and is never shown to other members.
Email verification
Every account is confirmed with a six-digit code sent to its email address before it can enter Buildfolk. Codes expire after ten minutes, and only the newest code works. When you sign in from a new device, we may ask for an emailed code again and send you a sign-in alert.
Age groups
- 13 and over: projects, feedback, AI chat with your own key, the Arcade, communities and Buildfolk Social.
- 13 to 17: a parent or guardian must agree before the account opens (we email them a link; without their agreement the account is deleted after 7 days). Social accounts are private by default (always private under 16), and adults cannot find teens in search or start chats or calls with them. Analytics cookies are never used for teen accounts. Read more on our Safety page.
- 18 and over: everything, including selling after approval.
Date of birth is self-declared, so it is not proof of age. Parents and guardians can contact us to review or delete their teen's data.
Rules everyone follows
No content that belongs to someone else, is sexual, harms children, bullies or threatens anyone, encourages violence or self-harm, scams or spams, impersonates someone, or breaks the law. To stop scams and keep members on Buildfolk, links, phone numbers, email addresses and payment requests are blocked in posts, comments, chats and community messages. The only links allowed are the five on your developer profile. Anyone can report content or block a member, and we may remove content or suspend accounts that break the rules.
Keeping your account secure
Passwords are stored only as a one-way hash, so nobody at Buildfolk can read them. Sign-in cookies cannot be read by page scripts, the live site uses HTTPS, requests from other websites are blocked, password guessing is slowed down, and off-site backups are encrypted. You can turn on sign-in codes and sign out every other device from your account.
YOUR PRIVACY
Your data, in plain words
What we never do
We do not sell your personal data. We do not show advertising based on your personal data. We do not read your messages; the only exception is a message someone reports, which our moderators may review. Calls and voice rooms are never recorded.
What we keep, and why
Your account details, what you publish, your messages and community messages (so the people you share them with can read them), and security information such as your IP address, browser and sign-in times, to keep your account safe. Security logs are kept for one year, as Indian rules require. When an account is deleted, its sign-up details are kept locked away for 180 days, as India's IT Rules require, then deleted. Sign-in sessions last 12 hours and codes last 10 minutes.
Some things never leave your browser: AI chat history, notes, saved items, Arcade scores and your own API key. They are erased when you sign out.
Who sees it
Other members see what you choose to make visible. For members under 18, the parent or guardian who agreed gets a daily summary of who their teen chatted with, never the message text. Service providers run parts of Buildfolk for us: Google (Gmail) sends codes, OpenRouter answers Buildfolk Assistant questions, our hosting provider (Railway) runs the site, Cloudflare stores photos and videos, and Google Analytics runs only if you accept analytics cookies.
Your choices
Download a copy of everything we hold about you, correct it, or delete your account at any time from Account → Your data. Deleting your account erases your personal details, posts, projects, messages and community messages. Change your analytics choice with "Cookie settings" at the bottom of any page. We reply to requests within 30 days.
This is a summary. The Terms of Service, Privacy Policy, Cookie Policy and Refunds and delivery policy are the full rules.
When you join, you will be asked to read these rules once more and confirm that you agree before your workspace opens. Buildfolk is free, and it stays that way: there are no paid plans.
